Things I’d Tell My Younger Self Before Starting a Business

Starting a business is exciting. Empowering. And, at times, overwhelming. When I first started mine, I thought I needed everything figured out before I could begin.
The perfect plan. The perfect timing.
But entrepreneurship rarely works like that.
At the time, I was also working a full-time corpora
te job. My days were filled with meetings and deadlines, and my evenings became something else entirely, building something that felt like mine.
Late nights. Emails after hours. Figuring things out in real time.
Looking back, there are so many things I would tell that version of myself, not just about business, but about how growth actually unfolds.
If you’re in the early stages, or even just thinking about starting, here’s what I’d want you to know.
You Don’t Need to Know Everything Before You Start
One of the biggest misconceptions about starting a business is that clarity comes first.
It doesn’t.
When I launched, I didn’t have everything mapped out. I didn’t know exactly how my services would evolve or what my agency would become. What I did know was this:
I loved creativity, storytelling, and helping brands show up with intention.
That was enough.
Clarity doesn't just appear. Rather, it's something you build through action. Every step forward reveals the next one.
Pricing Confidence Is Earned
Pricing your work can feel uncomfortable in the beginning. You question your value. You compare. You hesitate.
I remember charging $75–$100 for a logo and feeling unsure about asking for more. Looking back, the value of that work was far greater than what I charged.
But confidence didn’t come overnight.
It came from experience, results, and seeing the impact of my work. The shift happens when you realize this:
The right clients are looking for the right partner, not just for the lowest prices.
The Right Clients Will Change Your Entire Experience
Not every opportunity is meant to be a yes.
In the beginning, it’s tempting to take on everything. But not all clients are the right fit, and learning that early will save you a lot of energy.
The right clients trust your expertise. They respect your process. They see the bigger picture. Those are the projects that feel aligned and genuinely exciting.
The wrong ones make everything feel heavier than it needs to be.
Building a business is so much more than just getting clients. It's about attracting the right ones.
Systems Are What Sustain Your Growth
At the start, everything feels manageable. But growth introduces complexity quickly.
Projects, timelines, communication, and deliverables, without structure, things start to slip.
One of the most impactful decisions I made was implementing systems early.
Structure doesn’t limit creativity. It protects it.
When your business is organized behind the scenes, you create more space to think, create, and grow.
Visibility Will Take You Further Than Perfection Ever Will
For a long time, I believed everything I shared had to be perfect. But perfection is often what keeps people stuck.
Visibility is what creates momentum.
When you show up consistently, people start to recognize you, trust you, and remember you. Your content doesn’t need to be flawless to be effective; it just needs to be seen.
Building While Working Full-Time Is Hard, But It’s Possible
A lot of businesses don’t start with full freedom. They start in between responsibilities, in the hours after work, in the moments you choose to keep going.
That was my reality.
Balancing both required discipline, patience, and self-belief.
There were moments where it felt overwhelming. But what kept me going was simple:
Every small step counted.
Over time, those steps compound into something much bigger.
If I Could Say One Thing…
You don’t need to have everything figured out.
Start where you are. Learn as you go. Trust that you’ll grow into it.
Because entrepreneurship is about having the courage to begin, and the consistency to keep going, not perfection.
